Mindfulness in, as, and of Education: Three Roles of Mindfulness in Education

Sun, April 7, 3:40 to 5:10pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Osgoode Ballroom

Abstract

This paper articulates three roles that can be attributed to mindfulness practice in relation to education, following an exponential rise of publications concerned with implementations of the practice in educational settings. Mindfulness in education, reflects the most common path of mindfulness in contemporary education and frames the practice based on an economic-systemic perspective. Mindfulness as education, which is far less common, integrates mindfulness with education emphasizing the broader vision built carried by its origins. Mindfulness of education highlights the practice as a form of contemplative inquiry. It applies it as a mode of critique/reconstruction of educational theory and practice, which is especially relevant for philosophy/philosophers of education.
