Abstract

Previous studies about the campus racial climate do not provide much insight about challenges Black students may encounter at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) or institutions with majority enrollment of racial minoritized students. This study explored qualitatively the ways Black students view and interpret their racialized experiences in academic settings at an HSI, particularly their college adjustment academically and resulting strategies for managing and perhaps actively responding to the campus racial climate. This study also employed critical race theory (CRT) as an analytical lens to specifically understand how race might influence Black students’ perceptions of their college experience.
