Formal and informal learning are different in nature: Whereas the former takes place in organized predefined settings with intended learning objectives, the latter is mostly unintentional and arises as a by-product through everyday work experiences. Yet, empirical and theoretical models often do not differentiate between these two learning modes. The results of a multi-wave diary study with a sample of 263 employees show that both learning modes are affected by different antecedents: Whereas consciously planned participation in formal learning is primarily influenced by attitudes and beliefs about learning, informal learning are mostly determined by employees’ career-related attitudes. Besides the different individual antecedents, the study also shows the influence of organizational context factors on both formal and informal learning.
