The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of English medium instruction (EMI) on the learning experiences of students attending three collaborative transnational universities in Vietnam. Transnational education has gained attention on a global level, yet rarely is role of language discussed in student learning. EMI has led to a form of language hegemony in higher education, and makes learning difficult for non-native English speaking students. Findings indicate that transnational universities can cause a “double barrier” due to navigating both discipline-based terminology and the English language. This study contributes to understanding how the use of EMI at transnational universities can affect student learning and engagement in classes, particularly at the intersection of navigating multiple languages and contexts.
