Impression management, specifically facework, is an under-investigated part of online courses. This case study explores the use of facework, as defined by Goffman (1967), within asynchronous online discussions by a single student. Data were collected via surveys, interviews, and analysis of discussion transcripts from several college courses. The voice of this participant provides insight into the experiences of students engaging in online discussions and how the structure of the discussion can facilitate high-quality interaction, or, alternatively, the use of avoidance strategies. Based on the findings of this study, suggestions for instructors are provided.
