There is limited research on teacher residencies and race is only a tangential focus in most of what has been published on these programs, which inhibits our understanding of this prolific addition to the teacher education landscape. In this paper, I explore how two ideologically different teacher residency programs – No Excuses Teacher Residency (NETR) and Progressive Teacher Residency (PTR) – address issues of race and racism and attempt to promote social justice through their coursework and field placements. I find each program employs a different vision of social justice: one favors navigation, the other transformation. However, local factors and broader social forces seem to inhibit each program's progress towards its respective vision.
