This paper deals with Systemic Functional Linguistics-based methodology applied to the study of processes related to the development of student teachers’ professional identity. Distinctive linguistic markers are proposed to be looked at throughout reflective reports by the student teachers (n=33) who have been exposed to Project Based Learning in the science teaching tracks of two teaching colleges in the country. The findings demonstrate that the suggested method allows to identify implicitly conveyed messages in the reflective narratives to better understand the student teachers’ concerns, expectations, and hopes during the processes of their professional growth and identity development while studying to become teachers.
