This study highlights how focusing on a professional literacy leadership standard in Reading Methods coursework enlarges preservice teachers (PSTs) conceptions of teacher leadership. PST leadership preparation is an important area of research as the “fourth wave” of teacher leadership emphasizes teachers’ ability to influence policy which requires knowledge and vision for student success (Holland, Eckert & Allen, 2014). The intentional incorporation of literacy leadership assignment in the Reading Methods course indicated direct influence on many culminating leadership activities during student teaching. This suggests that further explicit leadership instruction during coursework may impact how PSTs enact leadership, within and beyond their programs.
