Poster #2 - A Partnership to Detrack Mathematics at a Diverse, Urban High School

Mon, April 8, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

In this paper, we provide the results from a survey that was administered to mathematics teachers and administrators at Franklin High. The goal of the survey was to get an initial sense of key stakeholders’ perceptions of heterogeneous grouping. We were interested in specifically identifying accomplishments, challenges, aspirations, information and supports, and ideas and initiatives associated with heterogeneous grouping in mathematics at Franklin High. Franklin High is the first new comprehensive high school in its district in over 35 years. There have been fierce protests from parents in the community who feared that the commitment of the school to detrack would take away student choice, school prestige, and dilute the rigor of the curriculum.
