Food Mapping as Community-Based Participatory Research

Mon, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Mezzanine, Carelton

Abstract

This cross-case and rich picture analysis compares three Food Mapping (FM) projects. FM is a form of Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) that uses critical cartography and citizen science to create community asset maps that provide a picture of the food resources in a certain area. This paper includes a short history of FM, review of definitions and tool kits, and analysis of the methodological approaches, and levels of community participation in Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. The study examines the maps and project outcomes, from handheld PDF brochures and art posters, to an interactive story map, envisioning (future creating) exercise, and mobile applications with crowd-sourced data. Implications for CBPR and future project opportunities are also discussed.
