Exploring the Validity of the Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education Rubrics Using the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing

Abstract

Through the Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education (VALUE) initiative, AAC&U facilitated the development of 16 analytical rubrics to assess student learning as an alternative approach to measurement through traditional, standardized tests. The scholarship of test development provides a robust framework for exploring the methodological soundness of these tools. This paper leverages the 25 Standards for Test Design and Development from the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing to discuss the development of the rubrics and how they have been used since their release in 2009. We analyzed multiple data sources (publications, field notes, rubric results) to establish the validity of VALUE rubric data and its implications for assessment and accountability in higher education.
