Typology of U.S. Teacher Leadership Programs

Abstract

In the national education environment, where schools have consistently demonstrated a lack of capacity to educate all students to high levels, the promise of teacher leadership is alluring. Why not utilize experienced teachers to expand schools’ capacity for reaching all students? In this study, we set out to map the landscape of teacher leadership programs throughout the U.S. to identify key distinctions among the types of programs and to develop informed hypotheses about which types of programs might be most likely to have an impact on students’ access to high-quality teaching and learning. Our examination the 250+ programs in our inventory led us to identify seven types of teacher leader programs.
