Transitioning to College en Familia: Funds of Knowledge, Community Cultural Wealth, and Critical Race Theory

Abstract

This qualitative study employs a Latino critical race theory (LatCrit) lens to identify the racialized, nativist, and systemic inequities that underlie the experiences of undocumented Latinx students and their families during the transition to college. This paper highlights how students navigate these systemic challenges by drawing from their funds of knowledge (FK) and community cultural wealth (CCW). This paper provides insight into how students utilize their knowledge and assets to address how the heightened xenophobic context impact their families’ experience with the transition to college. The youth in this study bridge the transition to college for their families, serving as cultural brokers between their immigrant Latinx families and home and the system of higher education in the United States.
