Abstract
This paper explores how one elementary school principal conceptualizes herself as a role model who inspires an ethical school climate through her words, decisions and actions. Role modelling is evidenced in how she communicates, makes decisions, builds relationships, and provides support.
The principal conveys moral messages that contribute to a climate infused with virtues, such as care and respect. Situations that the principal encounters are many and varied, requiring her to be present to others. When the principal guides teachers, comforts students, and reassures parents, she strives to remain aware of her moral influence.
This research impacts practice at the classroom and school level, by bringing increased understanding of the principal’s significant influence in cultivating an ethical school.
