Sat, April 6, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 205C

Abstract

“City Success” is whole school integrated student support intervention that increases student achievement by tailoring community supports to student needs. Evaluations show that the intervention succeeds particularly well with English Language Learners (ELLs). This study explores why, studying how City Success student support coordinators support ELLs. This multi-site case study uses mixed methods to investigate how coordinators relate to ELLs and their families, understand the challenges they experience, and explore the resources they use. Results identify several factors: the relationships City Success coordinators have both inside and outside the school; the challenges faced by ELLs, their families, and City Success coordinators; and the resources that City Success coordinators use to build on ELL/family strengths and address their needs.
