Abstract

Global environmental challenges are clearly on the rise on numerous fronts and ESE posited as central to building sustainable futures. While education is seen as a key component limited attention is focused on school leaders and their role in promoting whole school sustainability approaches. This study is an international, cross case analysis of effective school leadership for implementation of ESE.
The main research aims are to identify exemplar cases known for ESE implementation in diverse international settings, describe their key strategies, enablers, and barriers relative to ESE implementation, and develop an internationally relevant model of effective leadership through cross-case analysis of these exemplar cases. The overarching aim is to highlight transformative school leadership for sustainability across countries and continents.
