Due to the rapid development of technology and wireless applications in recent years, mobile devices have been widely used for assisting the learning activities of higher education. Nonetheless, though mobile devices have become valuable learning tools, evaluative evidence for their substantial contributions to learning in higher education is scarce. In light of this, the present study executed a meta-analysis that included 77 peer-reviewed journal articles published over a 17-year period (2001–2017) and further revealed that mobile devices generated a medium effect size of 0.604 for learning performance of higher education. Furthermore, pertinent moderator variables such as learning outcomes, teaching methods and hardware used shown different effect sizes among their various categories.
