Access to higher education is an important concern for refugees and their integration into the affected receiving countries and has thus far generated worldwide academic interest. Studies have been initiated exploring how the successful integration of students with a refugee background into tertiary education can be effectively supported. One avenue for integration lies within Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). While MOOCs offer a large and seemingly global possibility for learners to access education, they are plagued by high dropout rates overall. Noticeable dropout factors are students’ preconditions, like academic and professional experiences. The present paper focuses on the relation of students’ preconditions to dropping out of distance learning. The results indicate different kinds of user profiles concerning online refugee students.
