Triadic Mentoring in Early Childhood Education: The Role of Relational Agency

Fri, April 5, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

Current orientation to field experience in teacher education have shifted the view of student teachers' learning as a solo activity , to a view that stresses the importance of engaging various forms of mentoring to mediate student teacher learning in practice. This study examined the impact of the design of a triadic mentoring model of university-school collaboration on student teachers' learning to teach in the context of early childhood education. Findings suggest that the distinctive ways in which relational agency developed in each of the triads examined constituted a major factor influencing the quality of student teachers' learning. We discuss this finding and elaborate on a conceptual framework that emerges from the study.
