Poster #8 - Using the Language Muse Palette to Support Language, Literacy, and Content Learning in English Learners

Tue, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

In this session, we demonstrate use of the Language Muse Activity PaletteTM (Palette) (https://languagemuse.org/). English language learners (ELLs) continue to be the fastest growing subpopulations in US schools. The Palette is a web-based application designed for use by content area teachers or ELL specialists and their students to foster understanding of content-area texts, and language and literacy skills development. The user begins by typing or uploading a content area text. Linguistic features of the text are identified using natural language processing algorithms. The identified features are then used to generate activities automatically, which in turn can be edited by the teacher, then assigned to students using the built-in, learner management system. We also summarize results of a recently completed evaluation.
