Abstract

Parents and carers would welcome more advice on supporting their children’s digital literacy practices in the home. Frequently Early Years settings know little about these, although they may be more diverse and well scaffolded.
In response to this, and the paucity of research relating to very young children, the project “A Day in the Digital Life of children aged 0-3” was implemented in six countries in Europe, adapting a participatory methodology involving video, interviewing and inventories.
Working with three families, we find that engagements with tablet apps exhibit “tensions and contradictions for families regarding digital play” (Kervin et al. 2018). We also discuss to what extent this framework meets interactions involving traditional media converged into digital settings like TV.
