Small Sample Sizes in Mixed-Methods Research Studies: The Importance of Nonparametric Statistics

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to advocate for the use of nonparametric statistics in mixed methods research (MMR) studies. First, we present the advantages and limitations of using nonparametric techniques. Second, we demonstrate empirically how infrequently nonparametric statistics appear in MMR studies, even those published in flagship journals (e.g., Journal of Mixed Methods Research). Results from one search for articles indicates that most MMR studies omit the use of nonparametric statistics, because only 13 articles were found using our search criteria. Third, we introduce a meta-framework for using nonparametric statistics in MMR studies. We hope that this paper will help remind researchers of the importance of nonparametric statistics and increase the use of nonparametric statistics in MMR studies.
