Autonomy-supportive teaching is a part of classroom practice and crucial for student learning. However, evidence is needed about the role of autonomy-based learning when the condition of student participation in the classroom is at the scope. This systematic empirical review contributes to the question, how effective reform-based approaches of learning and instruction are in providing learners with the right to design the learning environment (called “autonomy-based learning environments”, ABLE). In total, N=117 empirical studies of the last twenty years were collected that explicitly address the effects of ABLE on student learning and motivation. Overall, studies show heterogeneous results regarding the effects sizes. Positive effects on student motivation could be found in cases, when instructional support from teachers is strong.
