This study utilized flow theory for school engagement to examine data from the After-School Programs and Activities Surveys (ASPA) of National Household Education Surveys Program (NHES) (APSA-NHES: 2005). Analysis was done to analyze children’s grades across all subjects and ratings of child’s school work. All statements of comparison were made using independent samples t-tests with a cut score ≥ 3 and are significant at the 95 percent confidence interval. Findings suggest that when the primary conditions of flow for engagement in center-based after-school programs are met, students experience/demonstrate increased academic success and socio-emotional development when compared to students enrolled in nonrelative after-school programs not provided by the school.
