Poster #28 - An Exploration of Linear and Nonlinear Student Growth Patterns on a Reading Comprehension Task

Abstract

Linear and non-linear growth models were examined for students in grades 4-12 using real-world data collected over 4 time points (Fall, Winter, Spring, Fall) from the Lexia RAPIDTM Assessment, the Reading Assessment for Prescriptive Instructional Data. Results suggest that steady linear growth may be present during particular stages of learning (i.e. grades 4-6 in this study), or skill development, but as gains lead the learner closer to mastery, growth becomes incrementally smaller because improvements become less pronounced (resulting in a non-linear, decelerating growth trend). This was evident for students in grades 7-12.
