Emotions can be both a facilitator and inhibitor of learning. Positive emotions enhance motivation, interest, and satisfaction of learning. Emotional design features, such as colors and shapes, embedded in learning environments manipulate learners’ affect and learning outcomes. To inform the implementation of emotional designs, this meta-analysis investigated the effects of learning from emotional designs. Results from 15 studies showed that the inclusion of emotional designs enhanced affect and motivation in learning (g = .20). Mean effect sizes were moderated by variables including participant characteristics, methodological and contextual features of the studies. Moderator analyses were conducted for affective and motivational outcomes. As this meta-analysis is the first on emotional designs in multimedia learning, the findings have significant theoretical and practical contributions.
