How Effective Are We? Superintendent Perspectives on State Superintendent Standards

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to learn superintendent perceptions of state superintendent standards. The researchers created a questionnaire that consisted of twenty-six state standards-based Likert items with seven additional questions on the use, accuracy, and effectiveness of state standards. Participants reported the most confidence in Standard 3: Policies and Governance, specifically in their ability to advocate for children and families and model and expect professional conduct. Participants reported the least confidence in Standard 4: Instruction. However, the researchers also found that only 53% of the participants were evaluated with the state superintendent standards.
