Teacher Training and Comprehensive School Safety Plans

Sat, April 6, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 706

Abstract

Out of concern for student safety, schools across the country are investing in comprehensive violence prevention plans which generally include environmental, educational, and/or regulatory elements. Using data from the 2015-2016 Survey on School Crime and Safety (SSOCS) (N = 2092), this paper investigates the relationship between the elements of these plans and the likelihood of schools offering staff training in positive behavior supports, early warning signs of violence, and crisis prevention. Based on a logistic regression model, there is limited ability to predict whether schools offer staff training based on the individual elements of school safety plans. However, all three types of staff training are negatively predicted by school use of environmental modifications and social-emotional programming.
