Teachers' Accountability to Parents in Comparison to School Management Among Israeli Arabs and Jews

Abstract

The study explored teachers’ accountability to parents and school management in two ethnic educational sectors in Israel: Arab and Jewish. Explored as well were the contributions of cultural values (individualism, collectivism) on teachers’ accountability. The sample included 418 teachers from K-12 schools. Findings indicated that in both sectors, teachers exhibited a significantly higher accountability to school management than to parents. Collectivism had a stronger relationship to both accountability audiences than individualism. However, the extent to which individualism was related with accountability to management depended on ethnic sector. These results seemed to expand the theories of teachers’ accountability and parental involvement to include reporting parent-teacher relations and cultural values in diverse school systems.
