Attitudes of Hmong College Students Toward College Affirmative Action Policies

Abstract

Hmong are among the most educationally disadvantaged minorities in the United States; yet, affirmative action policies (AAPs) that could potentially benefit Hmong students have rarely been applied to Asian Americans. There is little or no previous literature regarding predictors of support for AAPs that target the Hmong population. Using a sample of 119 Hmong students from seven U.S. colleges, this study employed a hierarchical regression model to identify predictors of Hmong students’ support for a college AAP designed to benefit Hmong students. Results indicated that principled policy beliefs followed by gender were highly significant predictors of support. Ethnic identity and personal benefit were not significant predictors in the final model.
