Research suggests veterinary students and professionals are at an increased risk for mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, or suicide. Yet, many individuals in distress often do not seek professional mental health services. Although some barriers to accessing services have been identified, other factors, including how the professional culture influences service underutilization is poorly understood. This study explored a more in-depth understanding of veterinary students’ barriers to seeking mental health treatment, and in particular, describes how these barriers, as both individual and cultural phenomena, are inter-related.
