Family- and Community-Engaged Teaching: A Systems Approach to Preservice Teacher Preparation

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 200 Level, Room 205A

Abstract

This paper describes the design and initial implementation of a teacher preparation program focused on family and community engaged teaching and learning. The program is grounded in systems thinking, social justice and interprofessional practice. By analyzing student survey data, video, and small group presentations we present work towards a paradigm shift in teacher preparation involving collaboration between departments in teacher education and human services. Findings reveal two student cohorts’ engagement with an initial two-course sequence. This research is part of a longitudinal study exploring teacher preparation relative to three themes: value of systems practice, learning about self in relation to working with others, and understanding how connecting with community is integral to effective teaching.
