Using Clery reports from 2016, data from CollegeResults.org (2017) and the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, this study seeks to compare numbers of reported sex offenses at predominately Black institutions (PBIs) to the number of reported sex offenses at predominately White institutions (PWIs). Reporting refers to informing law enforcement. The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1990 (Clery Act) requires that institutions receiving federal financial aid maintain and disclose campus crime statistics and security information. Institutions that violate this act are subject to civil penalties such as fines and suspension of federal student financial aid.
