Poster #5 - Pedagogical Content Knowledge: A Case Study of an Expatriate Mandarin Chinese Teacher

Abstract

Under the urgent need of Chinese instructors in the U.S. job market, some of the Chinese graduates from U.S. universities were hired to teach Chinese as a foreign language (CFL), disregard the fact that they were not certified teachers and never had any Chinese teaching credentials. This research aimed to closely examine what teacher knowledge one novice CFL instructor possessed, what were the strengths and weaknesses, as well as what shaped the focal instructor’s teacher knowledge. More importantly, this case study also addressed the affordances on Chinese language teaching in the U.S.
