The paper articulates a multimodal approach to teaching and learning, while employing the modes of narrative texts and dialogue, which allowed for a developing and sustainable dialogic atmosphere. This study used Sullivan’s (2012) dialogical approach and Bakhtin’s concepts during read-alouds with two Spanish- speaking ENL kindergarten students and their teacher. The teacher researcher read and videotaped nine narrative texts, applied Cazden’s (2001) classroom discourse techniques, and transcribed responses. The findings concluded that it is crucial to explore the modes of narrative texts and talk and the effects it has on creating meaning and increasing dialogue.
