STEM Climate Survey Developed Through Student-Faculty Collaboration

Mon, April 8, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Room 802B

Abstract

This paper presents a Likert scale survey tool for parsing undergraduate STEM environments at institutions of higher learning. Our tool was designed collaboratively -- by students, STEM professors and a postdoctoral teaching fellow. Employing a collaborative method during survey design allowed us to compose a survey that: (1) probes many more facets of undergraduate STEM climate than do past survey tools; and (2) is designed for use by STEM professors and instructors, non-specialists in educational research. Finally, we present the data from the first administration of the survey at our institution, and thereby demonstrate one way to approach data analysis.
