Comparing and Contrasting the Perspectives of Online Students and Faculty

Mon, April 8, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 600 Level, Room 604

Abstract

In this qualitative case study, the researcher compares and contrasts student and faculty perceptions of community in a synchronous online doctoral program and the factors influencing the establishment of community. Findings suggest that while online students’ sense of community was influenced by their interactions in class, in study groups, and at in-person social events, faculty saw the classroom as the only space where they should take an active role in community-building. Findings have implications for developing distance programs that engage and retain students.
