Poster #23 - The Principalship in Rural Central America: Leadership Beyond the Schoolhouse

Sun, April 7, 11:50am to 1:20pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

A region of Central America has historically been considered a forgotten district due to the remoteness of the villages and schools. Educators are accustomed to serving their communities with limited resources and support. The school principals, who often have teaching responsibilities, serve the communities beyond the regular administrative duties. This paper reports the findings of two case studies examined through narrative inquiry conducted in Garifuna and Mopan Mayan villages in Central America. The case studies explore the role of the principal as a change agent to improve the education system, and the impact of the school principals as leaders in their communities. By sharing these stories, the authors illustrate the importance of transformative and servant leadership to promote change.
