From First-Order Teachers to Second-Order Teachers: Leveraging Research for Cross-Cultural and Intercultural Understanding

Abstract

Research that is integrated, to reflect multiple perspectives and cultures can help discern more broad-based approaches to the work of second order teachers. Using multiple case studies conducted in England, Jamaica and the United Arab Emirates, this research sought to explore the experiences of beginning second order teachers as they transition from being first order teachers. Using the same interview protocol across the three countries, data was collected from nine participants to derive an intercultural and cross-cultural understanding of the meanings they attach to their experiences. Findings presented will highlight the opportunities and tensions experienced by the beginning second order teachers and advance arguments regarding the theory, policy and practice of how beginning second order teachers transition
