Poster #61 - Are Schools Effective for Whole-Child Development? Multi-Objective Value-Added Model of School Effects

Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

This study applies multi-objective value-added model (MOVAM) to assess school effects on children's academic and socioemotional learning outcomes beyond the influences of pretest and demographic background characteristics. Through multivariate multilevel analyses of the ECLS-K 2011 data with teacher ratings of socioemotional skills and standardized test scores in reading, math and science, the study measures simultaneous school effects for students’ academic and socioemotional growth and examines commonalities and differences in the patterns of growth trajectories and student/school predictors between different domains. In light of broad-based educational mission and policy shifts under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the study informs school accountability redesign by helping understand effective practices by which schools, along with families and communities, work towards whole child development.
