Poster #20 - Examining the Student Persistence When Playing an Online Game Called Playing Physics Playground: A Survival Analysis

Tue, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Using game features within learning environments to engage students has been increasing in popularity. Students’ persistence in these environments plays a vital role in solving game levels. Data were derived from the Physics Playground game. The outcome variable is the time spent on each game level, considered as a persistence measure. The purposes of this study are to investigate the effects of the background and game level variables on completing the game levels as well as the effect of the game levels on the risk of giving up playing the game using survival analysis techniques.
