Emotion has been shown to affect teachers’ cognition, motivation and their approaches to teaching. This paper investigates the role of emotion in the development of teacher assessment literacy over time. A quantitative study tracked the development of a group of beginner science teachers. The teachers were found to experience a range of emotions as they assessed students, especially when they were involved in ethical dilemmas or were called upon to make decisions for high stakes qualifications. Findings also demonstrate the considerable impact of emotions on teachers as they themselves were assessed. This study illustrates the link between emotion and cognition, and highlights the emotional work of teachers and the strength these emotions bring to bear on teachers’ decisions.
