Special Education in Cuba: Insights From a Cross-Cultural Exchange

Abstract

Research in the United States addressing special education teacher training and disability identification is common, yet a dearth of international special education research exists. Therefore, the authors conducted a comparative analysis of special education in Cuba and the United States during a cultural exchange composed of school visits, lectures, and meetings in Cuba. Findings from the exchange revealed that special education teachers in Cuba are typically prepared at an earlier stage and with more practical experience. Additionally, the Cuban education system approaches disability identification from a public health perspective rather than a medical perspective. Future comparative research exploring common issues in special education could prove promising for the international special education community.
