Poster #52 - The Economy and Me? An Explorative Qualitative Study on Student Beliefs About the Economy

Tue, April 9, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

It is the objective of this paper to present, analyze, and discuss empirical research findings of an explorative qualitative interview study conducted to investigate fundamental student beliefs regarding the economy. The paper addresses the question: Which fundamental beliefs about the economy are expressed by secondary school students? The results show that student beliefs about the economy are often fragmentary. Students are aware that they are part of the economy, but their own current role or their real-life situations are hardly reflected. By summarizing the most important results and giving recommendations for action, the study shows that the central challenge is to make economic content more accessible to students and to make it more concrete.
