Translanguaging as Resistance in Language and Literacy Practice and Pedagogy

Tue, April 9, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

In this project, we used critical, qualitative inquiry to document the language and literacy practices of emerging bilingual, Latino children at a community based, bilingual writing center. Located in a working-class neighborhood in urban Philadelphia. In a related ongoing project, we explored what the language and literacy pedagogies and practices were of the teachers and children at the center. Our initial findings showed that what was intended to be a bilingual space had given way to a monolingual, English space in practice. As a participatory project, we, the authors and professors and doctoral students in language and literacy education, created a bilingual writing workshop that would intentionally bring forth the children’s Spanish knowledge and draw on their entire linguistic repertoires.
