Poster #23 - Preparing Preservice Teachers for Teaching Global Issues Using an Online, Disciplinary Simulation

Mon, April 8, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze how one cohort (N=24) of social studies preservice teachers’ (PSTs) participation in an international simulation prepared them for teaching global issues. The study focused on three areas of their professional learning: content knowledge, disciplinary skills, and instructional practice. The results showed that after their participation most PSTs demonstrated more complex knowledge of globalization on their concept maps, and they were able to use strategies of diplomatic negotiation. However, not all created an authentic simulation based on a world history textbook although all applied some core simulation principles.
