Poster #3 - Combining Teacher and Peer Status to Improve Online Communication

Sun, April 7, 9:55 to 11:25am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

This study investigated how the combination of teacher and peer status helped to improve online communication for students aged 10-12 in Google Classroom. Gommans, et al. (2015) suggests that status is related to social competence and greater communicative skills, allowing high status students to construct, clarify and elaborate with greater ease than their lower status peers. Gommans et al. (2015) note “high status children interact differently with their peers than low status children” (p. 599), suggesting that peer status is an important consideration for teachers selecting collaboration partners. Boaler (2008) suggests teachers have the power to help shape how students view each other through interventions intended to raise the particular status of a student.
