How Do We Collaborate Within Disciplinary Literacy? A Literature Review

Abstract

When Moje’s (2008) article, “Foregrounding the Disciplines in Secondary Literacy Teaching and Learning” appeared in the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy (JAAL), it reignited conversations in the field that have lasted for over ten years. This makes conducting an analysis of articles about disciplinary literacy published in JAAL from October 2008 (after Moje’s article appeared) to December 2017 a timely endeavor. The purpose of this paper is to explore collaboration in the context of disciplinary literacy. To this end, 26 articles published in JAAL are reviewed. Preliminary findings from this review indicate five avenues of collaboration within disciplinary literacy, revealing greater attention needs to be given to how to work collaboratively to improve students’ disciplinary literacy skills.
