Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of collaborative group assessment on student engagement in mathematics. Collaborative learning has been hallmarked as having the potential to be profitable in all learning environments including online learning and elementary classroom communities. The use of group rewards as well as strategy instruction is responsible for the largest positive effect of any cooperative method. One challenge presents in cooperative groupings of how to hold students accountable for contributing without evaluating individual contributions. “The competitive grading and informal reward system of the classroom creates peer norms opposing academic efforts, since one student’s success decreases the chances that others will succeed” (Slavin, 2015, p. 7).
