Abstract

This study considered the experiences and perspective of seven couples who are raising a child or children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The study focused on the couple relationship (rather than on parenting issues) and the factors that maintained the relationships and supported the couple. The researchers employed qualitive methodologies that included semi-structured interviews as the primary source of data and thematic inductive processes as the main method of analysis. The interviews yielded a rich description of the perspectives and experiences of couples who are raising a child or children with ASD. A number of themes emerged from the data including Commitment, Adaptation, Communication, and Positive Outlook.
